Former Projects of Michael Wimmer

  • Green Facade Digital Twin
    Michael Wimmer — Jan 2025 - Jul 2027

  • Instant Visualization and Interaction for Large Point Clouds
    Eduard Gröller — Jul 2023 - Jul 2026

Point clouds are a quintessential 3D geometry representation format, and often the first model obtained from reconstructive efforts, such as LIDAR scans. IVILPC aims for fast, authentic, interactive, and high-quality processing of such point-based data sets. Our project explores high-performance software rendering routines for various point-based primitives, such as point sprites, gaussian splats, surfels, and particle systems.

  • Toward Optimal Path Guiding for Photorealistic Rendering
    Michael Wimmer — Feb 2023 - Jan 2027

Photorealistic rendering, which is essential for many applications, involves evaluating complicated integrals. These integrals are predominantly approximated with a Monte Carlo method called path tracing. Unfortunately, this method generally requires many samples and therefore long computation times for noiseless images. Recently, so-called path-guiding techniques have been introduced, which gather knowledge about the integrands to facilitate sampling.

  • Ecosystem Modeling Using Rendering Methods
    Michael Wimmer — Jul 2022 - Jun 2024
  • Unstable Bodies
    Michael Wimmer — Dec 2021 - Nov 2024
  • ECOlogical building enveLOPES: a game-changing design approach for regenerative urban ecosystems
    Michael Wimmer — Apr 2021 - Mar 2025
  • Green and Smart Buildings: Solar Irradiation Analysis for Early Design Phases
    Michael Wimmer — Jan 2021 - Sep 2021

The main objective of this project is to demonstrate a novel approach to solve the problem of irradiation analysis in architectural design significantly faster than existing methods. This speed increase in turn enables new design workflows in architectural design. It will enable the designer to reduce the expected energy consumption of the designed building. More generally we will show that a difficult problem, previously viewed as a simulation problem, can be addressed utilizing the technology and techniques from computer graphics, specifically GPU accelerated rendering.

  • Efficient workflow transforming large 3D point clouds to Building Information Models with user-assisted automatization
    Michael Wimmer — Dec 2020 - Nov 2022
    Photogrammetry made easy
    Philipp Erler — Dec 2020 - Mar 2024

  • Digital Urban Mining Platform: Assessing the material composition of building stocks through coupling of BIM to GIS
    Michael Wimmer — Oct 2020 - Sep 2022

The strong population growth and urbanization are increasing the global resources and energy consumption. The AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) industry is responsible for 60% of the extracted raw materials and generates 40% of the energy-related CO2 emissions. In Austria, the AEC sector is responsible for 70% of total annual waste – facts that are underlining the importance of implementing recycling strategies.
