Showing fluids with realistic appearance and behavior is the goal of many applications such as movies or computer games. In order to reproduce realistic effects, fluid simulations have to take physical laws into account. There are different ways to represent fluids.  Lagrangian simulations use a particle-based simulation. This paper explains fundamental laws of fluid dynamics and gives an overview of basic Lagrangian methods. Above that, selected state-of-the-art techniques are presented. Apart from general models, the simulation of specific properties and effects related to fluid dynamics is analyzed. This includes high viscosity fluids, diffuse material and turbulent behavior.
