Join the H4DES Project! Exploring the Future of Haptic Data Physicalization

We are seeking 1-3 highly motivated PhD researchers to join H4DES – Haptic 4D Data Encoding for Sensemaking , an interdisciplinary project bridging human-computer interaction, digital fabrication, and medical data visualization. H4DES explores how 4Dprinted, haptically enhanced artifacts can make complex data physically tangible and intuitively understandable.

Each PhD researcher will lead one of our three core work packages, while collaborating closely with the others:

WP1: Encoding time-dependent deformation of biological structures into elastic, 3D-printed materials. This position is ideal for candidates with a background in computational modeling or additive manufacturing.
WP2: Translating multivariate and multidimensional data into material behavior to develop new forms of tactile data visualization. This position is suited for those experienced in data visualization, haptics, or perceptual research.
WP3: Embedding sensing capabilities into deformable objects to create interactive tangible interfaces and VR props. This position is perfect for candidates skilled in embedded systems, interaction design, or human-computer interaction.

We value creativity, technical curiosity, and teamwork. The three PhD candidates will work across institutions (Visualization and Data Analysis Group at the University of Vienna and Research Unit of Computer Graphics at TU Wien) and collaborate intensively to revolutionize how humans perceive and reason about complex information through touch.

The main contact points are Daniel Pahr (daniel.pahr@univie.ac.at) and Renata Raidou (rraidou@cg.tuwien.ac.at ).
