Speaker: Prof. Yingcai Wu (College of Computer Science and Technology, Zhejiang University)

With the rapid development of sensing technologies and wearable devices, large amounts of sports data have been acquired daily. The data usually implies a wide spectrum of information and rich knowledge about sports. However, extracting insights from the complex sports data has become more challenging for analysts using traditional automatic approaches, such as data mining and statistical analysis. Visual analytics is an emerging research area which aims to support “analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces.” It has proven its value to tackle various important problems in sports science, such as tactics analysis in table tennis and formation analysis in soccer. Visual analytics would enable coaches and analysts to cope with complex sports data in an interactive and intuitive manner. In this talk, I will discuss our research experiences in visual analytics of sports data and introduce several recent studies of our group of making sense of sports data through interactive visualization.
