Renata Raidou

This course page describes the lecture of Sommersemester 2021. See list of other semesters.

Basic Information

This course aims at providing a deep insight into the research field of Applied Medical Visualization. We will be dealing with defining, analyzing, designing, assessing, and presenting high-level visualization and visual analytics research, with regard to real-life (bio-)medical applications and their requirements.
  1. Obligatory Registration in TISS before 20.03.2021
  2. Make pairs in TUWEL.
  3. VisMed 1 and Visualisierung 1 are strongly recommended previous knowledge, but not mandatory. There will be a short recap at the beginning of the course of the VisMed1 material.
  4. Lectures will be given in English.

Course Structure

This year the course will consist of three parts:

  • Lectures (10 sessions: Fridays at 14.00--16.00. The first and last lecture will be longer: 14.00--17.00. The duration of the session with the final presentations will be determined when groups have been finalized.)
  • State-of-the-art report (abstract by 20.03, main report between 01.04--30.04)
  • Final projects (between 01.05--25.06)

Material

The course will be structured based on the book of B. Preim and C.P. Botha "Visual Computing for Medicine" (2nd ed.) (http://medvisbook.com/). Additional reading material will also be given, which will be uploaded on the course's TUWEL page.

Assessment

This year the course will be assessed as follows:

  • State-of-the-art report (work in pairs, 35% of final grade)
  • Final Project (work in pairs, 50% of final grade)
  • Presentation of the final project (15% of the final grade)
  • There is no exam for this course!

You need a passing grade for each one of the three components above!

Grading system:

  • >=   88 Points   ...   Sehr Gut (1)
  • >=  75 Points   ...   Gut (2)
  • >=   63 Points   ...   Befriedigend (3)
  • >= 50 Points   ...   Genügend (4)
  • <   50 Points   ...   Nicht Genügend (5)

  • The lectures will be done online (in zoom), please check TUWEL for details.
  • The lectures will be generally recorded, but presence is highly recommended (especially given the online setting again this year).
  • The last session (Final Project Presentations) is OBLIGATORY!
  • Instead of the usual Invited Lectures, students can select any lectures from the Bio+Med+Vis Spring School and attend them freely (and for free!)

(2) State-of-the-art (STAR) Report (35%)

  • Make pairs and pick a topic by 20.03.2021, at 23.55 on TUWEL.
  • By 20.03, you also need to submit on TUWEL one small abstract per group (200-400 words) which should include a high-level description of the topic, the structure of your report (bullet points with the content) and 3-5 related references that you plan to include.
  • For the abstract, there is no strict template. This is done so that you get early feedback about the structure and high-level content your STAR. The feedback will be given within a week.
  • Work on your report between 01.04--30.04.2021. Submit on TUWEL by 30.04.2021 at 23.55.  One report per group will be submitted.
  • Templates and guidelines for writing the report will be given on TUWEL.
  • Get grade and feedback within a week. You need at least 50% of the grade to continue with the course.

(3) Final Project (50%) + Presentation (15%)

  • Groups are the same as in the report. Pick a topic, relevant to your STAR report on TUWEL. Consult with the lecturer about topics and data (by mail).
  • Template and guidelines for writing the report of the final project will be the same as the STAR report.
  • Work on your project between 01.05--20.06.2021 Submit an 8-page report on TUWEL by 20.06.2021 at 23.55.
  • Give a 15-min presentation on 25.06.2021. Presentation counts in the grade (15%). You need at least 50% of the grade to finalize the course.
